Added to his 118 goals makes 159 international goal involvements, integral part of Portugal winning their first ever international tournament. Why does he need to track back? 7. 'Portugal can go far'

    FT: Portugal 3-2 Ghana

    Jose Fonte

Portugal defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I believe this will calm everyone down a little bit.

Portugal will go into the next game with a bit more confidence and they will analyse the good and the bad.

We need to be more solid defensively and getting everybody back into shape because there was too much space in the second half. Portugal made a few unforced errors.

If they can improve on that they will always create chances and have goals in the team. If they do that, they will have a great chance in the competition.

    Portugal

Ronaldo has become the third player to be both a country's oldest and youngest goalscorer at the World Cup, along with Croatia's Ivica Olic and Denmark's Michael Laudrup (among sides to have more than one goalscorer at the tournament).

This was the moment Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score at five different World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022).

  11. 'Most important was the three points'

    FT: Portugal 3-2 Ghana

    Jose Fonte

Former Portugal defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It got very nervy and it ended up being a strange game. Portugal's game management and decision-making in the second half could have been better. There were a few mistakes that they normally didn't make.

I liked the reaction after they scored the first goal but after that it could have ended as a draw.

I'm sure they will look back, analyse it and improve for the next one. The first game is always hard and the most important thing was to take the three points.

  12. 'Big players making strange choices'

    FT: Portugal 3-2 Ghana

    Matthew Upson

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

There was so much going on. We spoke at half-time saying this game needed to change and the second half probably was a lot more how I expected it to go.

I didn't expect though how when Portugal went 3-1 up they weren't solid and their big players made some really strange choices.

Ghana very nearly got their rewards.

  13. Day to remember for Ronaldo

    FT: Portugal 3-2 Ghana

What a day for Cristiano Ronaldo. He's the first player to score at five different World Cups as Portugal win their first match of a World Cup for the first time since a 1-0 win against Angola in 2006.

  14. 'A theatrical end'

    FT: Portugal 3-2 Ghana

    Matthew Upson

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

The look on Cristiano Ronaldo's face when Danilo Pereira has to clear that off the line. - it's heart-in-mouth stuff. There were so many little errors in game management and what to do with the ball.

It was a bizarre, theatrical end to the game.

We weren't expecting that as the first half was very dull.

Portugal have won the game but were far from convincing.

  15. Post update

    FT: Portugal 3-2 Ghana

A miserable first half replaced by a second 45 dripping in drama.

Portugal are up and running. Ghana gave it a good go in the end but must respond against South Korea on Monday.

  16. FULL-TIME

    Portugal 3-2 Ghana

    And breathe.

    Cristiano Ronaldo
  17. Post update

    Portugal 3-2 Ghana

    What. On. Earth.

Play goes on and Portugal almost hand an equaliser on a plate to Ghana.

The keeper doesn't see Inaki Williams and lets go of the ball inside the box but Williams slips at the crucial moment.

  18. Post update

    Portugal 3-2 Ghana

If only Ghana had played like this in the first half...

  19. Post update

    Portugal 3-2 Ghana

Ghana attacks first half v Portugal.

Look at the difference in the volume of Ghana attacks between the first half (above) and the second (below).

Why didn't they give it more of a go before the break? Just wanted to stay in it maybe?

Ghana second half attacking thirds vs Portugal.
  20. Post update

    Portugal 3-2 Ghana

    That's close!

Osman Bukari let's fly and it lands on the roof of the net.

    Is that's Ghana's last chance?
